MUSIC AND SPORT
At St Peter's your child can participate in choir (no charge). We believe every child should enjoy singing, and develop their singing skills. Our Senior Choir uses the R.S.C.M. Voice for Life programme to step children through 'medal' levels. Children develop in both practical and theoretical music skills. The approach supports your child in using their voice in a healthy manner.
Year 2-3 Choir - Dave Shaw
Year 4 Training Choir - Victoria Panckhurst
Year 5-8 Senior Choir - Victoria Panckhurst
Our Year 5-8 Choir sings at the Christchurch Music Festival, The South Choral Festival, Jubilate and St. Peter's Masses.
We produce a school production bi-annually (Covid dependent) and are excited about 2023 possibilities. Shows take time, energy and commitment. Our lead characters need to commit to intensive training in drama, dance and singing. It's a worthy endeavour! We believe that musicals are for everyone – so every child from St. Peter's plays a part in our production. Broadway Jr., here we come!
Your child has access to itinerant lessons here. They are varied in cost, dependent on instrument, but sit at between $25-35 per half hour lesson. Fundamental to the success is the relationship between music teacher and child, and also a family commitment to supporting practice at home. Children who learn an instrument will have opportunities to perform in school assemblies.
Instrument options: Piano, Keyboard, Drums, Guitar, Ukulele, Trumpet, Trombone, Violin - from 2023, Speech and Drama - from 2023.
Through learning and by accepting challenges in health-related and movement contexts, students reflect on the nature of well-being and how to promote it. As they develop resilience and a sense of personal and social responsibility, they are increasingly able to take responsibility for themselves and contribute to the well-being of those around them, of their communities, of their environments (including natural environments), and of the wider society – The New Zealand Curriculum.
South West Zone Options (Y7 & 8)
Provided we have the number of students to put together a team, we are able to offer the following in Term 2 and 3:
Running - All students participate in the annual X-Country. Our fastest runners go on to compete at Zones and 'Canterburys'. We run a Principal's Running Club on Fridays before school.
Athletics - We hold an annual Athletics day, which leads on to Zones and 'Canterburys'. NB - Year 1-3 participate in Run, Jump and Throw on site at school to support preparing for this in later years.
Community Sports Options
Netball – St. Peter's school has a proud history of netball, and our co-ed teams are going strong! Our netball teams are run through The Keys Club, with parents running coaching sessions and organising the games.
